Streszczenie

Animals have accompanied man for thousands of years and their role in human life has seriously evolved. Man had power over domesticated animals and decided about their fate, they were used as a means of transport and helped humans with the farming. There is a group of animals, known as companion animals, which are ranked high in human life. Nowadays, animals are more frequently utilized in different animal-assisted therapies. Hippotherapy as a therapeutic intervention exerts serious influence on those participating in its sessions, and it affects all interpenetrating spheres of human life. Therapeutic effects of horse-riding were already known in 400 B.C. Hippocrates claimed that horse-riding exerted positive effect on treating certain health conditions.

Equine therapists, over the years, have noticed significant benefits to their clients resulting not only from the nature of a horse but also from its unique ambulation. One can say that a horse during a therapeutic session becomes a precise stimulator of movement.

Thanks to a similar way of ambulation in man and in a horse, during a horse riding session the rider’s pelvis, trunk and the shoulder girdle are made to move according to the physiological pattern of human ambulation, so a person with motor disorders has a chance to learn proper human gait pattern without walking.

Streszczenie

The above short analysis of scientific and medical, medicine and didactic treaties of the age of Renaissance allows us to present numerous motifs linked to health and physical fitness, which were in the realm of interest of Polish authors. Not all their statements were original, many notions  were taken from ancient scholars. Nevertheless, Polish Renaissance writers undertook the challenge of independent deliberations over the matter of health, formulating- also in a naive way- many faulty theories. These achievements are worth acknowledging. The scholars mentioned in the above article were in many cases forerunners and originators of certain proceedings which undoubtedly in their times were innovative and ground-breaking.

Streszczenie

Background: Water quality for tourists visiting South Luangwa National Park and other less developed regions is of the utmost importance in order to avoid gastrointestinal infections; one of the most common diseases among tourists. It is also important to the health of the local tourist accommodations and the local tourist economy.

Methods: Water quality samples assessing microbiological contamination were taken from the borehole and point of use in 14 tourist lodges and camps. Turbidity was assessed optically with a DelAlgua turbidity tube. For microbiological analysis, samples were incubated in the DelAgua Dual Incubator at 37°C and 44°C. Thermotolerant Escherichia coli (E. coli) was used as the
indicator bacterium for fecal pollution. Water samples were classified based of risk levels for pollution determined by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Results: Fifty percent of borehole samples showed no contamination. Two were found to be at high risk and the others ranged between low and intermediate risk. At the point of use, 80% of the samples were clean and compliant with WHO guidelines. Water contamination generally improved from the borehole to point of use. Turbidity at borehole samples were clear in 75% of possible samples. At the point of use, turbidity was clear in 81% of samples.

Conclusion: This study establishes the first baseline water quality data for tourist facilities at South Luangwa National Park in Zambia. While water quality at most sites is clean for human use, a regular monitoring system accompanied by maintenance is recommended.

Streszczenie

Introduction: One of the more common foot dysfunctions is a heel spur, which is a bony growth on the base of the heel bone. It is accompanied by pain. Extracorporeal shock wave therapy becomes an increasingly common, effective and non-invasive method of the heel spur treatment. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of shock wave therapy on pain and daily functioning in patients with the heel spurs.

Material and method: The study group consisted of 73 people with diagnosed the heel spurs and suffering from pain associated with this condition. Each participant underwent a series of 5 shock wave treatments with 7-day intervals. The treatments were conducted using an apparatus: BTL-5000 SWT POWER + HIGH INTENSITY LASER 12. This author’s questionnaire and a Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain were also used in this research.

Results: After applying the therapy, it was observed that there is a statistically significant decrease in the intensity of pain experienced by patients during the day (from 5.28±1.46 to 1.1±1.03) and at night (from 1.65±1.84 to 0.17±0.58). The statistical analysis also showed a significant decrease in the frequency of pain during the day and at night after applying shock wave. Before the therapy, the majority of patients indicated, that pain affected their professional activity rarely, often or very often. However, after the therapy, the majority of participants felt that pain does not affect their work. Similar results were obtained in relation to the question regarding the influence of pain on the performance of daily activities.

Conclusions: Shock wave treatments had the effect of reducing both the frequency and severity of pain. The treatments also reduced the negative impact of pain on professional and daily activities in the participants.

Streszczenie

Introduction: The high mortality rate, as well as the percentage of disability resulting from stroke, constitute a significant social and socioeconomic problem. Many countries are introducing prevention programs to minimize the primary and secondary risk factors that trigger stroke. Currently, efforts are being made to raise awareness of the urgent implementation of specialist and effective treatment, and the extremely significant role of physiotherapy introduced immediately at the early stages of stroke is underlined.

The objective of work: To present the activities and procedures for a patient with a stroke. Discussion of the principles and goals of early post-stroke rehabilitation, including physiotherapeutic activities undertaken in the case of life-threatening and highly impeding the therapeutic process of stroke complications. The aim of the authors was also to present the current leading methods and concepts of rehabilitation used in early stroke therapy and to review modern methods used in secondary post-stroke rehabilitation.

Materials and methods: The article is a narrative review of topics related to therapeutic and management in the acute phase of stroke. The study includes the analysis of literature from the period 2009 to 2021. The database contained books, magazines, and articles. Browsers were used: Google Scholar and PubMed.
