Streszczenie

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic and the related sanitary rigour pose a great challenge for universities preparing young people to work in medical and medicine-related professions, including the profession of a physiotherapist. It is particularly difficult to conduct placements, during which both students and employees of the institution as well as patients will be provided with maximum safety, but at the same time high standards of education will be maintained. The aim of the study was to assess possible changes in the quality of placements that might have occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic and the applicable sanitary regime.

Material and methods: The study was conducted in October 2021 among 67 students of physiotherapy at the University of Applied Sciences in Tarnow, Poland. The sample consisted of both women (n = 49) and men (n = 18) who had completed at least one full work placement prior to the outbreak of the pandemic and at least one full work placement during the pandemic. Students voluntarily filled in a purpose-built electronic questionnaire, in which they responded to 20 questions referring the conditions of placements, cooperation with staff, the atmosphere in the institution and the skills acquired there. They determined on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 – has definitely changed in favour, 5 – has definitely changed in an unfavourable way), how professional practices have changed due to the pandemic and the sanitary regime. Students could also add their comments in the form of recommendations aimed at improving the quality of placements. They were invited to do it with the following statement: Provide an example of a practical solution that would help improve the quality of placements.

Results: According to the respondents, the most unfavourable changes in the quality of placements caused by the pandemic are: increased stress related to placements, worse conditions for learning how to diagnose and plan therapy, limited opportunities to learn about modern methods of therapy and limited opportunities to work directly with the patient. The respondents also noticed positive changes in the quality of placements. These were the opportunity to work in a small group, a better atmosphere in the institution, more help from the staff and better familiarization with the place of the placement.

Conclusions: The pandemic has brought both positive and negative changes in the quality of placements. Monitoring the quality of placements and surveying students’ opinions is a very important tool in improving the quality of education. It is worthwhile to carry out extra quality control studies at times of change to be aware of possible changes in the quality of placements induced by such challenging situations. It was also interesting to notice that students expect some of the changes related to the sanitary regime to persist after the pandemic has ended.

Streszczenie

Introduction: A person suffering from multiple sclerosis needs the care of numerous specialists, starting with the care of a doctor and a physiotherapist, and ending with an occupational therapist. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to assess the role of an occupational therapist in working with people with MS in the opinion of patients.

Material and methods: 108 persons with multiple sclerosis aged 24 to 71 (average age 41.8 ±11.1) participated in the study. The research tool was the author's questionnaire consisting of 28 questions regarding the disease and the cooperation with an occupational therapist. The results were developed using descriptive statistics, which included the arithmetic mean, standard deviation, minimum value and maximum value. For statistical analysis, the R software was used, and all analyses were performed with the Chi-squared test and the Fisher's exact test with the Monte Carlo simulation method.

Results and conclusions: During the exacerbation of the disease, the respondents had the greatest difficulty in getting dressed and getting out of bed or chair. The least problematic issue for the respondents was the continuation of their favourite activities, hobbies. Among the respondents, most of persons who regularly attended rehabilitation cooperated with an occupational therapist. Most of the respondents participated in occupational therapy held in a rehabilitation centre and indicated modifications of daily performed activities as a therapeutic intervention. In the group under study, most persons would like to cooperate with an occupational therapist individually at home. Among these persons, most would expect to develop alternative methods of performing important but difficult activities and to introduce auxiliary equipment during the exacerbation of the disease.

Streszczenie

During a basketball game, the main motor activities performed by the players are running, jumping, sprinting and changing the direction of the run. These motor activities should constitute the main content of the battery of physical performance tests in basketball. Reliability and the minimal detectable change (MDC) in tests used in basketball are rarely reported in literature. The aim of the study was to fill this gap and an attempt to show the reliability and MDC of various tests among basketball players in the Cadet category. For this purpose, research was carried out in a group of 14 basketball players aged 15.3 years. Jumping tests, sprint test and a change of direction test were carried out. Based on the results of these tests, the index of reactive force, sprint momentum and the utilization index of the stretch-shortening cycle were calculated. The reliability and MDC of all tests, with the exception of the utilization rate of the stretch-shortening cycle, were at an acceptable level. In practical terms using of the procedure described in this study may provide valuable guidance in the analysis of changes in basketball players' physical performance.

Streszczenie

Antarctica is one of the last great wilderness areas on Earth. Early Antarctic expeditions during the Heroic Age of Antarctic discovery (1895–1922) returned reports of frostbite, scurvy, snow blindness, and death. Today, over 50,000 people travel to the Antarctic each year via research expeditions, commercial cruise ships (tourism), and research cruises. This study reviewed the existing research reporting the health challenges encountered during modern day travel to Antarctica. The results identified a transition from the Heroic Age when death was common to a contemporary time when death is an uncommon event. The review identified musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries resulting from moving equipment and supplies to be the most common health challenge encountered by long-term land expeditions. Digestive issues such as constipation and dyspepsia were also common in during the coldest months. For tourist oriented commercial cruise ships, motion sickness resulting from rough seas was most prominent. Specifically, the small nature of the cruise ships made them prone to rough seas in Drakes Passage. During scientific cruises where research is primarily conducted aboard the ship, dermatological conditions (viral, fungal, bacterial) such as dry skin, dry lips, eczema are the most common health challenge. Musculoskeletal and soft tissue injuries are also common given the physical challenge associated with strenuous research.
