Relationships between sacral, lumbar and thoracic spine position and trunk mobility in the sagittal plane in young adults

Streszczenie

Aim of the study: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the position of the sacrum, lumbar and thoracic spine and the mobility of the trunk in the sagittal plane in young women and men.

Material and methods: 64 students (33 women and 31 men) were studied. The mean age in the study group was 22.94 ± 1.51 years. The following tests were performed on each subject once: measurement of height and weight, assessment of spinal alignment and mobility in the sagittal plane using Zebris Pointer.

Results: The results obtained were analyzed using appropriate statistical tools. Statistically significant correlations were obtained: in the alignment of the sacrum in relation to the lumbar spine (strong correlation), in the alignment of the lumbar spine in relation to the thoracic spine and, in the male group only, between the alignment of the thoracic spine and mobility in the direction of flexion in the thoracic segment (moderate correlation).

Conclusions: In women, horizontal sacral alignment coexisting with deepened lordosis was most frequently observed. In addition, women were more likely to have a deepened thoracic kyphosis, less range of motion in the direction of thoracic flexion and extension, and greater mobility in the direction of lumbar flexion and extension than men. In men, the vertical alignment of the sacrum was accompanied by a shallowing of the physiological lordosis. In addition, in this group, a decrease in lordosis influenced an increase in movement to flexion in the thoracic spine. When planning a physiotherapy exercise program for a person in whom abnormalities in the alignment of the lumbopelvic complex have been noted, an individual exercise program should be selected. The study should take into account not only the evaluation of the alignment of the lumbosacral spine, but also the mobility of the segments above and below the examined area taking into account intergender differences.

Comparison of trunk alignment and postural habits of high school adolescents and university students

Introduction: It is widely believed that the postural quality of adolescents is poor and this condition is blamed, at least in part, on a sedentary lifestyle and low self-awareness of body alignment and awareness of movement quality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the postural habits and trunk alignment of high school adolescents against university students with high physical activity and high awareness of the importance of postural quality for health.

Material and methods: 59 high school students and 82 university students, male and female, participated in the study. Three-dimensional trunk positioning in habitual standing was investigated using the Zebris Pointer ultrasound device. Awareness of habitual posture during various activities of daily living was assessed using a validated questionnaire. Results were analysed using Statistica v13.

Results: High school students were characterised by a greater depth of thoracic kyphosis than university students. Female high school students tended to have shallower lumbar lordosis and male high school students tended to have deeper lordosis. High school students showed worse lateral trunk inclination and greater pelvic to shoulder rotation. The most important observation regarding postural awareness was related to sitting position. Women from both groups were more likely than men to admit to sitting with a bent and rotated trunk and crossed legs.

Conclusions: It appears that higher physical activity and / or greater knowledge of university students contributes to more correct trunk positioning compared to the physically inactive high school students. Postural habits, however, are similar in both groups. Gender significantly differentiates both posture and posture-related habits.

The association between family structure and physical activity among medical students

Streszczenie

Introduction: Lack of physical activity has become a tremendous health problem in young people, notably in the digital communication era. Due to burdensome academic tasks, the situation may be more rigorous for medical students. The family structure is supposed to influence children’s physical activity patterns.

Aim of the study: This study aimed to investigate the effect of family structure on physical activity levels in medical students.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was followed by 109 students; 75 (68.8%) were female. Gender, family structure, parents’ level of physical activity, number of families, and the presence of grandparents were included as independent variables. In contrast, students’ level of physical activity was a dependent variable. Data on independent variables were obtained through a guided interview. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was applied to assess students’ level of physical activity. Variables were dichotomously categorized to simplify statistical testing. Chi-square was applied to reveal the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.

Results: 39 (35.8%) students had low IPAQ score, 47 (43.1%) moderate, and 23 (21.1%) high. Most students (61.4%) lived in a nuclear family. There were 55 students (50.5%) who lived with family members less than 5; only 31 (28.4%) reported the presence of grandparents in their homes. Most students’ parents reported doing sufficient regular exercise (73.1%). Students’ IPAQ score was associated with the family type (OR 3.56, 95% CI 1.53–8.20, p = 0.002) and the presence of grandparents (OR 3.76, 95% CI 1.57–9.00, p = 0.002).

Conclusion: Medical students who lived in a nuclear family and lived without their grandparents had higher physical activity levels.

Streszczenie

The monitoring of physiological parameters using wearable (bio-) sensors of military personnel is a progressing process within the military environment. It sets high demands on such devices, in order to support healthcare and performance of the personnel. To get an ovierview of the current status of the use, the evaluation and the implementation in the military, in May 2021, the Multinational Medical Coordination Centre / European Medical Command has organized an expert workshop about ‘Biosensors Supporting Healthcare in Missions’. Three thematic clusters were addressed: ‘Human Performance and Readiness’; ‘Health and Medical Management Applications’ and ‘Ethical and Legal Aspects of the Use of Biosensors’.

Streszczenie

Portable hyperbaric chambers are a therapeutic option for altitude disease in the mountains. By an increase of the oxygen partial pressure the patient’s symptoms ameliorate significantly. Portable hyperbaric chambers may be used as ‘stand alone therapy’ as well as in combination with other therapeutic options. Here we present the recommendation how to use the device and how to avoid problems. The recommendation has been agreed by all members of the medical commission of the world umbrella organization Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme (UIAA MedCom).

Streszczenie

This year the Annual Meeting in Berlin (September 15th to 17th) was the 25th one of the German Society of Travel Medicine and therefore it included some celebration. The scientific part included a wide variety of topics. Beside of ‘typical’ ones like malaria prevention and new vaccines there were lectures about space tourism (Prof. R. Gerzer), environmental risks (earthquakes – Dr. J. Lauterjung, altitude medicine – Dr. S. Baniya, and poisonous snakes – Dr. C. Pechmann). Prof. M. Tannheimer discussed quick ascents to extreme altitude by pre-acclimatized climbers while Dr. Kattner reported news about tick borne diseases. Yellow fever (Dr. K. Kling) and Hepatitis B in Nepal (Dr. A.S. Menner) were discussed intensively. Another topic was different aspects of cruise shipping (Prof. T.W. Heggie, C. Kopp, L. Damm). Prof. T. Küpper touched a ‘hot iron’: Ethical considerations in travel medicine. There was a special invitation to young scientists, students and clinicians with a specific event. Poster presentations added topics for discussions. The presented abstracts include lectures and posters and are listed in alphabetical order of the first author.
