Waste in film resonates widely. Waste can be a metaphor, a sign, and symbol of wider social, political, economic and cultural patterns. Waste reminds us of the excesses of capitalism, it gestures to precarious conditions of labour, it evokes the injustices of global inequality, it implies that the now-pervasive green rhetoric in popular discourse is ineffective, and, more directly, it is also something at the heart of film production. Waste can be visible and invisible – for example, the digital lives and afterlives of our everyday networked existence are swept under the symbolic carpet of (supposedly) immaterial cloud services. Waste is a political and economic challenge both in terms of how films represent the world and how films interact with the world through their production (film, for us, encompasses screen media – the process known as film, television, digital, streaming media).

We seek contributions that combine analysis of waste in films – how they are shown, treated, represented, re-envisioned – with critical perspectives on waste produced by films. We seek contributions in the following areas (but not exclusive to them) where each contribution explores how a theme (such as recycling) is represented on screen, and how it is enacted in the production infrastructure of the film:

- precarious work
- digital (im)materialities
- disaster capitalism
- environmental ethics
- farming
- nonhuman life
- demographic shock
- corporate social responsibility
- alternative lifestyles
- green documentaries
- energy infrastructures
- the fashion industry
- in the future
